How to become a Professional Engineer? (IR title)

It is paramount important that all engineering graduate register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia immediately after graduation or before they work as engineers. The registration with BEM is mandatory as BEM is the regulatory body whereas registration with IEM is optional. You are encourage to register with IEM (is a learned society) to keep abreast with latest info on engineering. Registration with IEM can only be done after your registration with BEM has been approved.

Practical Experience / Working Experience:
Minimum 3 years practical experience (in a branch/discipline approved by BEM) is required to be fulfilled by a Graduate Engineer so as to be entitled to apply for registration as a Professional Engineer in future. If you are currently working overseas, you must make sure that 1 year is obtained in Malaysia.

All the 3 years min. experience must be supervised a professional engineer in the same branch. The experience must recorded. How to record? Depends to individual. The following is important to be recorded:
(1) Date & Period (e.g: from when to when, year to year)
(2) Project Name
(3) Your title (designation) in the project e.g. Project Manager
(4) Scope of Works - details
(5) Design & drawings (if related)
(6) If you are Civil Engineers - you need to have 12 months in Design/office and Site/field

Go to Page 3 of the PAE form. The Lampiran G1 will provide you with some idea on how to keep and prepare you report.

Profesional Development Programme - PDP Hours
Within that 3 years, you must also attend four mandatory courses and clock in 60 hours PDP hours i.e:
(1) Code of Ethics (12hours)
(2) Safety & Health at Work (12 hours)
(3) Eng ineering Management Practice (12 hours)
(4) Any Courses related to your branch of engineering (24hours)

You must also complete not less than 30 units of PDP programme by attending technical talks, seminars, society meetings or community services.

Professional Assessment Exam:
Having completed/satisfied all the above, you may then apply to sit for Professional Assessment Examination owned by BEM now conducted by IEM on behalf of BEM. How to apply?:

(1) Fill in the PAE Form. Submit to BEM. We will coordinate with IEM.
or
(2) Go to IEM, inform IEM that you wish to sit for PAE (they will not ask you to be a member of IEM if you do not wish to)
or
(3) You may also sit for Professional Interview owned by IEM. You will be requested to register as IEM Graduate member if you haven't.

Professional Assessment Examination involves Report Submission, Oral Interview and Essay Writing:

First & Second Examiner will be appointed by IEM. The examiners and yourself will communicate and determine the date for oral interview and essay writing. Report must be send beforehand to the examiners. The report must be chop and signed by PE who supervised your job/experience.

Oral Interview: Max 2 hours - interview is based on the report you submitted.

Essays Writing consists of 2 sections:
Section A on Training and experience & Basic engineering
Time: 1 ½ hour (1500 words)
What is Expected:
Professionalism of candidate
Experience in design works
Site works
Management
Managing projects

Section B -Code of ethics
Time: 1 ½ hour (1500 words)
What is Expected:
An understanding of the professional code of ethics and conduct.
Role of engineers in the society vis-à-vis his professional code of ethics.
Write and present in a clear and concise manner.

Upon passing the Professional Assessment Examination, the Graduate Engineer may apply to be upgraded as Professional Engineer.

mcm mana kalu case mcm sy, sbb sebelum ni x register dengan BEM atas reason xminat ambik IR..then bila rasa minat tu smp sy baru register dengan BEM ..then experience sy sblm ni layak x untuk dikira menduduki exam IR

Pengalaman bekerja sebagai jurutera hanya diiktiraf apabila anda berdaftar dengan BEM mengikut undang2 Malaysia.

Untuk register sebagai Graduate Engineer (GE)dgn BEM

1) Borang A (Form A)
2) Salinan Ijazah
3) Salinan Transcript
4) Salinan Kad Pengenalan

1) Download n print dari BEM homepage-Isi borang tersebut.
2)+3)+4) Dapatkan pengesahan dari Professional Engineer (PE) kat bangunan BEM,KL atau pergi ke pejabat JKR di bandar anda minta jumpa IR minta chop dia.

Setelah semua siap pergi Pejabat Pos, beli Kiriman wang RM50 (untuk bayaran proses di BEM)dan envelope serta setem (tuliskan alamat BEM KL)masukkan semua dalam envelope dan poskan.

Tunggu lebih kurang 4 bulan (paling lewat) untuk BEM hantar surat kepada anda.

Kalau saya ambil sijil health and safety officer.. boleh ka saya jadi seorang Ir nanti? Perlu ka saya memperolehi diploma atau degree in engineering untuk menjadi seorang Ir?
